Real Madrid records lowest attendance in 10 years

Real Madrid records lowest attendance in 10 years

Real Madrid despite their historical success of 13 UEFA Champions league trophies, over 100 million subscribers of their Facebook page and financial might had one of the lowest match turnout in over a decade as a club. The Los Blancos despite their Global appeal were stunned to host less than 50,000 attendance in their league opener against Getafe on Saturday.

Julen Lopetegui was handed his first league victory as Dani Carvajal and Gareth Bale were both on target in the 2-0 victory over derby side Getafe. Sports website UK however reported that the barely 48,466 supporters made it to the game. This is their lowest turn-out since 2009 game against RCD Mallorca which only 44270 people featured, which was barely before the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester united in the summer. Statistics indicated the departure of the Portuguese talisman to Juventus last month is the cause of the low turnout in the Sunday game, though it’s believed to be more than that with scheduling and summer holiday also to blame for the poor attendance at the club’s league opener.

Saying has it that the Spanish capital is a ghost town in the month of August as most locals head to the coast for the holiday. Barcelona also is of similar features with 52,356 present for their league opener against Alaves at the Camp nou on Saturday. Despite that Barcelona is by the beach, locals leave the Catalan capital in August to head elsewhere on the coast, while the 10.15pm kick-off was also a turn-off for many fans in both games. Real Madrid game was the worst because of the time of their match. The Madrid club played their game on Sunday night which is not usual favorable for viewers. There is hardly any ideal time for supporters coming from outside the city, from other parts of Spain or from overseas country, for children who need to keep late night and for adults who intend going to work on Mondaymorning.

The 4-2 loss to Atletico in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday may have deterred some supporters too, while Ronaldo’s exit, a lack of summer signings and a feeling that this season may be one of transition are perhaps other factors in the low figure on Sunday.

In addition, Getafe naturally have few number of supporters and visited Bernebeu with very few despite staying in the same location with the home team with 18 kilometer separating the two side. Getafe boss Bordalas tactical approach is also perceived to be a factor. The Getafe boss who prefers negative football or spoiling tactics might have ultimately discouraged the Getafe supporters to make the trip to the Bernebeu.

In Spain, clubs can be fined for failing to fill at least 70 per cent of their stadium, although that measure is unlikely to be applied to the biggest clubs and Madrid’s attendance should rise in the coming weeks anyway as games are scheduled earlier and locals return from their summer break.
