SOME Gwanda-based Highlanders FC supporters are reported to have approached Ernest "Maphepha" Sibanda and urged him to consider running for the club's chairmanship in next month's elections.

Highlanders members will meet at the club house on February 4 to elect an executive chairman, who will take over from Peter Dube, who is not eligible to contest unless Zifa lifts the suspension it imposed on him in November 2016.

Since then, vice-chairman Modern Ngwenya has been acting chairman and is reportedly interested in the top job. Businessman and Bosso benefactor Kenneth Mhlophe was the first to announce his interest in the job and has been campaigning on social media.

Bosso members will also vote for a secretary-general and committee member. Emmett Ndlovu and Wisdom Mabhena are the incumbent secretary-general and committee member respectively.

While Ndlovu has been coy about seeking re-election, Mabhena has confirmed his candidature for another term and he will come toe to toe with Heart and Soul Supporters' Club chairman Peacot Hadebe and Charles Moyo, who has also reportedly told close associates that he wants to contest.

Club legend Lawrence "Lofty" Phiri will be gunning for the secretary-general's post, having initially told associates that he wanted to run for the chairman's post. He backed off after Mhlophe made his intentions known.

Phiri will battle it out with young administrator Nkululeko Ndlovu.

It would, however, be the entry of Sibanda into the race that would add a new dimension, should he "accede" to the Gwanda "supporters".

"It's true that some guys from Gwanda have approached me to run for the club chairmanship post, but I have not made up my mind as yet. We still have time to do that. I need to do wide consultations and see where it takes me," said Sibanda.

Sibanda was the last Bosso chairman to land the league title 12 years ago. He was disqualified in the previous election that saw the suspended Dube securing the job uncontested.

Asked about the possible entry of Sibanda in the race, Mhlophe said: "That's what makes Highlanders so dear and a marvel. It's a democracy and the people will decide on the day of the elections."

According to an election notice flighted in Saturday's newspapers, aspiring candidates must obtain nomination forms from the club's office, 50 Robert Mugabe Way and pay a fee of $100, which is refundable should a candidate poll in excess of 10 percent of the total votes cast. The closing date for submission of completed forms is Saturday January 20 at 12 noon.
