Desperate Bosso fumble for whatsapp help

DESPERATE times call for desperate measures.

It's no secret that Highlanders is drowning under a ballooning debt of close to $1 million and the club is leaving no stone unturned in trying to turn around its fortunes.

Crowd trouble at Barbourfields Stadium dominated media headlines for all the wrong reasons and the club is now seeking a robust approach to open communication lines with its members and supporters alike.

And that includes even meeting representatives of the club supporters' social media platform — WhatsApp — groups to solicit ideas that will see the club scale greater heights.

Highlanders chief executive officer Nhlanhla Dube confirmed meeting supporters WhatsApp group representatives.

"The first meeting was part of a broader approach to interact with our supporters in organised meetings and creating a platform where we can share ideas.

"Basically the meetings are for the club to hear from the supporters and for them to hear from us.

"Remember the supporters are the consumers of the club's products and services so it's important that we listen to their views," said Dube.

Of the 13 groups invited for the first meeting, half of them turned up.

Dube hopes future meetings will attend to more serious issues such as managing crowd trouble.

The 2017 season was an unforgettable year for Bosso in terms of hooliganism, which saw the club lose thousands of dollars in fines to the PSL for missile throwing, pitch invasions and other unsavoury acts of violence by its supporters.

"The supporters group representatives are the club's direct access to the fans so pertinent issues articulated in our meetings will be communicated to the supporters and hopefully change their mindsets when it comes to issues such as crowd trouble," he said.

More meetings are expected in the New Year when Bosso begin preparations for an onslaught on the 2018 Premiership season.
