Fresh from securing a new mandate to lead Zimbabwe for the next five years, President Emmerson Mnangagwa arrived in New York to participate in various meetings and engagements ahead of his inaugural address of the world body. The President is expected to address the United Nations General Assembly on 26 September 2018.

In a show of his commitment to tackling the various economic challenges facing the country, the President is accompanied by the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Prof Mthuli Ncube and the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, Dr John Mangundya. This is unlike previous visits to the General Assembly meetings by the previous Government of former President Robert Mugabe, where he would be accompanied by huge delegations. President Mnangagwa is living up to his word of reducing unnecessary Government expenditure on non-core activities.

Sources in Government indicate that, during his stay in New York, the President is expected to hold several meetings and engagements with various financiers and other Heads of State and Governments as the country seeks to deepen its re-engagement thrust.

Since his initial inauguration in November 2017, President Mnangagwa has prioritised economic revival and ending the country’s decade-old international isolation. He has reached out to the Commonwealth and processes for the country’s re-admission into the grouping are underway. He has instituted various reforms in the operation of Government departments.

His election has been widely endorsed by all progressive forces worldwide.
