The Editor,

My heart sank when I heard that teacher from Murehwa are embarking on a 200 kilometer protest walk to Harare to ask Mugabe and his government to step down for the sake of Zimbabwe. While I have nothing but admiration of these teachers, I fear for their safety. As I wrote in my article Zanu (PF) is on the ropes!, this action must be well coordinated to include all stakeholders as a Zimbabwe alliance for change.

Churches, opposition parties, all civil servants, village representatives, women groups, youth, vendors, students, lawyers, business people, teachers from around the country, and anyone I did not mention must join together with the teachers from Murehwa on 25 August 2016. We cannot have less than one million people on this day or we kiss our protest to see Mugabe out good bye.

We must have a plan because Mugabe must be history after 25 August 2016. We must not worry about the army taking over power; if they do this will be our lucky. If Mugabe hands over power to any of his cronies; that should be fine too. As long as we as a Zimbabwean people manage to make our leaders accountable; as long as anyone aspiring to be our leader knows that we the people of Zimbabwe have the final say, I say we will have succeeded with our protest.

If the cowards run for dear life, we must have a plan of taking over power on a transitional basis. Let us have a structure in waiting as soon as possible. We have to have a plan for the day after Mugabe. We need to get the country going again and cannot afford to be caught napping. Having said that, I would ask all the stakeholders to have a representative ready to serve on a two year transitional government committee.

If one million people show up for the protest, ZANU (PF) government will be history on 26 August 2016. We are not going to be violent but we will and must protect ourselves from police abuse.

Sincerely,
Sam
