A MVURWI pirate taxi driver was robbed of his car by an unknown suspect who purported to be a passenger going to Mutorashanga.

Josphat Kwekwani (54) was plying the Mutorashanga — Mvurwi route on Wednesday last week when he was robbed of his car worth $4 000 by the suspect who tricked him into disembarking from the driver's seat to open a back door before the suspect sped off with the car.

Mashonaland Central acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Petros Masikati confirmed the case.

"I can confirm that an unlicensed taxi driver was robbed of his blue Honda fit registration number ADJ 8440 near Farai Secondary School, while doing his daily routine on October 17 around 1430hours by an unknown suspect," he said.

He said Kwekwani had six passengers on board when he left Mvurwi bus terminus and upon arrival at Farai Secondary School, the suspect disembarked and the complainant proceeded to Mutorashanga.

While driving back, he met the suspect who lied to him that he had forgotten his bag at the back of the vehicle.

"The suspect pretended as if he was failing to open the door and called for assistance from the driver who left the engine running. The suspect quickly got behind the wheel and sped-off," Masikati said.

He said cases of vehicle theft were on the increase in Mashonaland Central province after another motorist from Glendale was robbed of his white Toyota Raum registration number AED 4845 early last month and to date it has not been recovered.
