Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions secretary general Japhet Moyo has warned that politics of appeasement would not take the nation out of the woods at all following President Emmerson Mnangagwa's indications that an opposition leader will now be recognised in government.

"The politics of appeasement would not take us out of the woods at all. I thought it was about people, ordinary citizens, not leadership. First was the war veterans, then we had compensation(with some claiming 100% disability), then the chiefs and just after the elections it was the war veterans again," Moyo said.

"Now we are told it is the turn of the opposition leadership that is going to be given pecks. We are told that would make them patriotic, my gosh, how? Is this government  telling us that if they please the opposition leaders then money would fall from the trees, companies would open, clean water and good infrastructure would follow."

He said obviously our diagnosis of the problems is completely wrong and people are likely to recommend wrong prescription for their ills.

"The problem is not the opposition and has never been the opposition but the policies of those in government. Maladministration and Corruption dating from Willowgate scandal, the Samson Paweni maize scandal, the war compensation scandal, our excursion into DRC and many more are the source of where we are today. In fact we did not have a strong opposition party when we laterally ran down the country. How then does an opposition became a problem that needs to be silenced with material benefits?" he said.

"After the opposition has been paid off, who is next on the line, while the nation is ravaged by medieval diseases like typhoid and cholera?"
