PARLIAMENT today elects the Speaker of the National Assembly, Senate President and their deputies. Zanu-PF yesterday caucused on the matter at the ruling party headquarters in Harare.

The appointments will pave way for the First Session of the Ninth Parliament, which will be officially opened by President Mnangagwa on September 25.

Impeccable sources said the Politburo unanimously agreed to retain Advocate Jacob Mudenda as the Speaker of the National Assembly.

According to the sources, Adv Mudenda would be deputised by Tsitsi Gezi.

The Politburo also nominated Marbel Chinomona as the Senate president. She will replace Edna Madzongwe. Chinomona was the deputy Speaker of the Eighth Session of the Parliament.

She will be deputised by Retired General Mike Nyambuya. Pepurai Togarepi, according to the sources, was nominated Zanu-PF chief whip in the National Assembly. He will be deputised by Obedingwa Mguni while Tsitsi Muzenda will be deputy chief whip in the Senate.

This comes after President Mnangagwa proclaimed September 25 as the day for the official opening of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament of Zimbabwe. The President is expected to set the legislative agenda for the new session.

Clerk of Parliament Mr Kennedy Chokuda said the event would also be preceded by the swearing-in of legislators, who were not available on Wednesday last week.
