Maintenance saga

Maintenance saga

REVENGE is sour!

Rugare Mucherengi approached the courts to arm-twist her husband Benjamin Mucherengi, a prison officer stationed at Khami Maximum Prison on the outskirts of Bulawayo, to pay maintenance.

In response, Benjamin left to stay with a girlfriend in Nkulumane suburb and from time to time visits his wife to issue threats.

"I am married to Benjamin Mucherengi under Marriages Act Chapter 5:11 but he is now staying with another woman in Nkulumane suburb. He moved out of the house after I had claimed maintenance since he was not looking after the family.

"He usually comes to Khami Prison Complex where I am staying and every time he comes he threatens to kill me and the children as punishment for claiming maintenance.

"He used to beat me up but now when he comes to harass me during the day I run away and at night I seek refuge from neighbours. My husband is also demanding money from me and if I refuse to give him he starts threatening and insulting me," complained Rugare.

In response Benjamin didn't refute his wife's accusations. He said she was also in the habit of assaulting him and that is why he was no longer staying at home.

"I agree with what she has said but I want the court to grant a binding order since she is also in the habit of assaulting me and that is the reason why we are not staying together," said Benjamin.

In her ruling presiding magistrate Adelaide Mbeure granted a reciprocal order in which she charged the parties to keep peace by not insulting, assaulting and threatening each other.
