Prophet Makandiwa broke the curse

United Family International Church(Ufic) founder Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa defied all odds when he  solemnised the union of at least 600 couples  at a mass wedding ceremony held in the month of November in Harare.

Matrimonial unions in this month are deemed uncultural and taboo by traditionalists who believe marriages, traditional rituals and ceremonies should not be conducted in the "sacred" month.

However, Prophet Makandiwa proved that culture is dynamic and evolves with time when he wedded close to 1 000 couples.

There is nowhere within the tenets of christianity where marriage in November is banned or deemed ‘illegal'.

Prophet Makandiwa's move was, therefore, above board and his detractors must not go to town and allege that he erred.

Former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai also stirred up a hornet's nest when he married Locadia Karimatsenga in the month of November 2012.

He had to appear before Chief Negomo at the Negomo Community Court  in a development that was met with mixed feelings.

Chief Negomo's ruling was made null and void by Justice Bharat Patel.

This shows that at law, Makandiwa's conduct is justified and he broke the chains of culture that confines traditionalists to old fashioned practices that stall development.

The couples who had their marriages solemnised at the mass wedding are, in fact, blessed beyond measure because they showed   that they are not conservatives and ‘slaves' of culture.

Makandiwa was merely conforming to the role of the Church in encouraging fruitful marriages in society and the importance of the marriage institution.
