THE Barotse National Council (BNC), as secessionist group in Zambia, concluded its closed door meeting in Mongu with a controversial resolution that western Zambia should secede.

In their submission to the council during the plenary session chaired by Ngambela Winyae Clement Sinyinda, representatives to the meeting from seven districts in Western Province said the area they recognise as Barotseland should become independent.

The representatives came from Sesheke, Kaoma, Lukulu, Kalabo, Shangombo, Mongu and Senanga.

And representatives from Kalabo district recommended that all members of Parliament (MPs) and councillors from Western Province should resign and join Barotseland.

The province has 17 MPs, prominent among them Nalikwanda MP Geoffrey Lungwangwa, Mwandi MP Michael Kaingu and Liuwa MP Situmbeko Musokotwane, all of the opposition MMD.

And Alliance for Democracy and Development president Charles Milupi says it is too early to comment on the matter and that his party will state its position later.

And CLAVER MUTINTA reports that United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema declined to comment on the secession resolution because he had not yet seen the document.

Mr Hichilema said he would critically study the resolutions and issue a comprehensive statement over the matter.
And MMD chairperson Michael Mabenga said he found it very difficult to comment over the matter.

"It is difficult for me to say anything because I am not privy to that information. I need to analyse the matter before I can say anything," Mr Mabenga said.
