A Mpopoma suburb man is lucky to be still on earth after his "dead" man theatrics saved him from being stoned to death by a gang of men who later robbed him of a 5 rand coin.

The man, Joram Dube was on his way to work at about 8pm on Friday last week when the gang believed to have been numbering six attacked him at a bushy spot near Mpopoma High School.

We caught up with Dube at his house where he narrated his ordeal.

"I was on my way to work when I met two guys near Mpopoma High School and after crossing paths with them they turned back and one of them tried to kick me," he said.

He said he managed to evade the kick and went on an offensive in an effort to defend himself. While he was fighting the two, more men came out of the bushes and from there on he was on the 'receiving end'.

"They attacked me with kicks, punches and stones. While I was trying to fight back, one of them hit me with a stone on my head and I fell unconscious."

He said by the time he regained consciousness the gang was carrying him heading towards a nearby church where they assaulted him and searched him.

"I think they did so, so that no one would see them robbing me. They took a 5 rand coin which was for transport and demanded that i release more but I told them that I did not have it. This angered them as they continued assaulting me. They were surely trying to kill me as their target was the head."

Dube said upon the realization that the gang wanted to murder him, he pretended to be dead. He just lay motionless so that they could stop and it worked as one of them instructed them to stop the assault. They took off with his belt, a jacket and a mobile phone. Dube however, managed to spot one of them which proved helpful in aiding the arrest of one of the gang members.

Dube said if it was not for his quick thinking he could have died. Meanwhile two of the gang members Truman Dube and Leeton Marufu appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Shepherd Mjanja on an attempted murder charge. They were remanded in custody to 5 January.
