Microsoft on Tuesday announced that the share of Internet Explorer 6 (IE 6) in the browser market in the United States has dropped below 1 percent.

Based on the latest data from Net Applications, Microsoft said that the U.S. has jointed the ranks of Austria, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway in dropping below 1 percent usage of IE 6.

The company said in its blog that developers and IT professionals could consider IE 6 a "low-priority" at this point and stop spending their time to support such an outdated browser.

Released in Aug. 2001, IE 6 is the sixth major revision of Internet Explorer, the web browser developed by Microsoft for Windows operating systems. As the default browser shipped with Windows XP, IE 6 has been widely criticized for its security issues and lack of support.

An article "The 25 worst tech products of all time" on the PC World magazine in 2006 called IE 6 "the least secure software on the planet" and an "invitation to hackers and other digital delinquents." Some websites like Google have dropped support for IE 6 in some services.

Last March, Microsoft launched the website "ie6countdown.com," which is dedicated to watching its usage drop to less than 1 percent worldwide, so more sites can choose to drop support for it.

According to the latest data from Net Applications, China, with around 25.2 percent IE 6 share, has the highest usage rate around the world.
