A 54-YEAR-OLD woman has been hauled before the courts for allegedly scalding her juvenile maid with boiling water following a misunderstanding.

Lucia Kuda Rugonye allegedly poured boiling water on the 17-year-old girl after she queried her decision to move the stove. Rugonye appeared before Harare magistrate Learnmore Mapiye charged with attempted murder.

Mapiye remanded her in custody to September 3 and advised her to apply for bail at the High Court. Prosecutor Idah Maromo alleged that on Au- gust 10 at around 9am, the girl was performing her daily chores in the presence of her boss.

It is alleged that the complainant placed a tin of water on the stove before going to fetch water from the borehole. When she came back from the borehole about 30 minutes later, she found her boss seated next to the stove.

The court heard that the girl inquired why Ru- gonye was seating next to the stove since she was unable to cook after she suffered a stroke on the left side. Rugonye allegedly indicated that she wanted to prepare her own food on the day.

It is the State's case that Rugonye asked the complainant to fetch tomatoes from the fridge and she complied. When she came back she asked Ru- gonye why she had pushed the stove but she denied doing so, the court heard.

The court heard that this did not go down well with Rugonye who pushed the complainant. The girl allegedly landed on her back and Rugo- nye allegedly grabbed the tin full of boiling water and poured it on the complainant's face and chest as she lay on the floor.

She ran out screaming for help and was assisted by two unidentified men who rushed her to the hospital for medical treatment.
