 Zanu-PF slams EU, US

ZANU-PF says Western countries criticising President Emmerson Mnangagwa's government for human rights violations have a vendetta against the ruling party having imposed sanctions on the country.

This was said by Zanu-PF spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo yesterday while responding to a joint statement on Wednesday by heads of mission of the delegation of the European Union (EU), France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Romania, Sweden and the United Kingdom as well as the heads of mission of Australia, Canada and the United States of America who accused Mnangagwa's administration of intimidation, harassment and physical attacks on human rights defenders, trade union and civil society representatives and opposition politicians.

"Everybody knows that they (West) have never liked us having imposed sanctions against the country and now they accuse us based on allegations.

"They are allegations and they remain such.

"What the EU must do is to follow what Sadc has asked them to do; they must remove the sanctions they imposed on us," Khaya Moyo told the Daily News.

Notwithstanding Zanu-PF's misgivings about the West's reaction to the situation in the country, Khaya Moyo said Mnangagwa's government was still keen on re-engaging them after decades of international isolation.

"Who has stopped the re- engagement process? We are still keen on that but we are calling on them, to remove sanctions," he said.

Khaya Moyo's sentiments come hard on the heels of another sharp rebuke of the international community by government which described the Western Europe countries and America as having "intrusive and judgmental attitude" on Zimbabwe. In a statement following the condemnation by the West, government expressed concern saying the criticism appeared to condone "violent" behaviour by the Nelson Chamisa-led opposition MDC.

Last week police dispersed protesters who had sought to demonstrate against the deteriorating economic situation in the country which has seen the majority of Zimbabweans wallowing in a vicious poverty cycle in the face of skyrocketing prices of basic goods and inflation-ravaged salaries for those in formal employment.
