THE opposition MDC has expressed concern over abductions of its members before and after the Monday banned demonstrations. This comes after two more MDC activists were on Tuesday night reportedly abducted from their Mpopoma house by suspected State security agents as the crackdown on dissenting voices by government continues.

Just a few days ago deputy mayor Tinashe Kambarami and two others were abducted in similar fashion allegedly for being kingpins in planning demonstrations. Kambarami who is also the MDC provincial youth chair had his dreadlocks crudely shaven off using broken glasses in a move that has left the Bulawayo community shell shocked.

As if that was not enough another MDC activist Goodson Phiri had
his door vandalised when he was abducted and left seriously injured. The case was reported at Tshabalala police station. Mpopoma legislator Charles Moyo yesterday confirmed the latest abductions.

"I am currently at Mpilo Central Hospital where two of our members Wilbert Verenga and Tadiwanashe Marumbei are admitted after they were abducted by seven mask- wearing armed people who we are told arrived at the pair's house in Mpopoma at around 10pm.

"They were seriously beaten and sustained head injuries. They were dumped at a Richmond bush where they were left for dead," Moyo told Daily News.

"The two were discovered yesterday morning and were ferried to hospital. Their money and cell phones were taken."

"The old dispensation was better and as an MP I am very upset and this must stop forthwith. This is a serious human rights violation and government must focus on solving the economic crisis than resorting to inhumane abductions," Moyo further noted.

Youth leader Takunda Madzana yesterday told this paper most MDC Bulawayo youths are scattered all over as they fear being victimised.

"There is a serious crackdown on our youths. Those in the provincial executive who have been largely involved in organising the demon- strations having been targeted, so they are all scattered now as the crackdown is still on going, the situation is now scary.

"So bad has been the situation that the attackers have been targeting close relatives in case they don't find their real target," Madzana said.

MDC provincial spokesperson Swithern Chirowodza said it was worrying considering that their crime was to organise a peaceful demonstration.

"We condemn, with utmost contempt, the abductions of MDC members in Bulawayo.

" The abductions currently taking place are similar to the abductions of Patrick Nabanyama, Itai Dzamara and hundreds of other MDC cadres who have suffered at the hands of Zanu-PF-aligned securocrats," Chirowodza said.

He added: "While the regulating authority barred MDC from staging its demonstration on Monday, it must be noted that the suspected State security agents started abduc- tions on Saturday, August 17, 2019. This was well before the demonstration.

"What is more revealing about the character of this government is that the abductors seized a spouse or parents of their MDC target.

"This is the same manner in which the Gukurahundists operated in the early 80s."
