A 22-year-old soldier in Darwendale appeared in court last week facing charges of raping a twenty three months baby  girl.

The man allegedly broke into a house where the girl was left by its mother who had gone to a nearby beerhall for a drink before raping her.

He was remanded in custody to January 10 when he appeared at the Chinhoyi Magistrate's Courts.

A medical examination, conducted at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital where the doctor confirmed that penetration was effected, was produced in court.

The man was arrested last week on the basis of a bloodstained T-Shirt that he was wearing when he got home. Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect was assisting police with investigations.

It is alleged that the one-year and 11-months-old baby was left locked up by its mother as she went for a drink at a nearby bar.

"Preliminary investigations show that (name withheld) saw the baby's mother before he left the bar and proceeded to the house where the child was left sleeping alone," he said.

He broke the locked door and raped the child before taking her outside and left her about 50 metres away from the house.

The mother returned at around midnight and found the door open, while the baby was not in the house.

She went outside and heard the child crying in a bush and discovered that she was bleeding before making a report at Darwendale Police Station. It was then discovered that (name withheld) arrived home around the same time with a bloodstained T-Shirt, leading to his arrest.

Insp Mabgweazara urged parents to protect their children and avoid exposing them to danger by leaving them alone.

"We are worried that in this instance, the child was left alone in the house while the mother went to drink beer at a local beerhall," he said. Most of the cases we have been handling are of children being raped by people they would have been left with. It is mostly the people they know."
