Kidnappers pounce on ex-MP Zindi's farm

FORMER Zanu-PF Mutasa South MP Irene Zindi has sensationally claimed that her farm supervisor was waylaid and kidnapped by three armed men as he patrolled her farm in Mutasa on Tuesday night.

A visibly-shaken Zindi, who was herself kidnapped in 2014 and had another attempt foiled two years later, feels she was the intended target of the men she suspects monitored her movements and activities at the farm the entire day.

She says she is traumatised and fears for her life. The incident happened despite her tightening security around the farm; she added more guards and set up two boom gates to the property on which she has been staying since 2013.

The former legislator told the Daily News yesterday that she was at a loss over the identity of the persons stalking her as she has been lying low in both her party's internal and in national politics since her primary election loss to Misheck Mugadza.

Zindi said her farm supervisor Zvikomborero Mukandi was waylaid while patrolling the farm at around 2100 hours on Tuesday evening by two bulky men in dark suits at gunpoint and taken to a black Toyota Prado that was parked in a mountain with a masked driver.

He was only released at around 0300 hours on Wednesday morning and told to walk off without looking back with guns pointed at him after a six-hour interrogation. She said Mukandi's kidnappers had a set of binoculars with which they were monitoring the activities throughout the day.

"I think if my supervisor had not made the patrol during which he was abducted they could have reached my house and I don't know what they would have done to me," Zindi said. The firebrand former legislator said Mukandi was mainly interrogated around Zindi's movements and life on the farm.

In 2014, three unknown men allegedly pounced on Zindi's farm and grabbed her vehicle which they used in kidnapping her. She was later dumped at some bushy place in the area. The assailants later dumped the vehicle in Gweru and police have reportedly failed to find leads in the case.

In February 2016 Zindi said two men sped off in a white Nissan double cab after her alert guard refused them entry onto the farm until they verified their claims of an appointment with the legislator.
Zindi has not been politically vocal about goings-on in her party focusing instead on her business and studies but believes her assailants could be people in high offices who may even be after her life.

"I think there may be someone in high offices who is abusing State resources to commit three people to watch me the entire day," she said. She said although she has made a police report,  a docket was yet to be opened as they said they would refer the matter to the law and order criminal investigations department.

Police spokesperson Paul Nyati was yet to give a response by the time of going to press.
