COMMUTER omnibuses here have hiked fares following the latest fuel price increase.

The kombis moved from $1,50 to $2 as operators moved to cushion themselves against the continuously rising costs.

The fare hike comes at a time a huge chuck of the commuting public has turned to the much cheaper Zupco buses which are charging 50 cents for a single trip.

Tshova Mbayiwa chairperson Atlas Moyo said they have not yet found a common position on the new charge.
"We have not agreed to raise the transport charges. Today I had to confront two people who had raised their charges to $2.

"This thing of raising charges will affect us because we are competing with buses. Buses are coming in numbers and for us to remain viable in business, we have to maintain the $1,50 charge," Moyo said.

He, however, said they were due to meet to discuss the matter.

Bulawayo United Public Transporters Association (Bupta) leader Keeper Ndlovu also said he was yet to meet fellow members over the issue.

However, a survey conducted by this publication yesterday indicated that most kombis were already charging commuters $2.

Some members of the public told Daily News yesterday that the kombi operators can raise the charge at their own peril, saying they will resort to Zupco buses.

Fuel prices went up last week exactly a month after the last increases, as the local currency falters against the US dollar.

Diesel now costs $5,84 per litre, up from 5,07 dollars per litre, while petrol now sells for 6,10 dollars from the previous 5,26.
