Mnangagwa mum on Obert Mpofu investigation

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has gone quiet about setting up a commission to investigate corruption allegations against Obert Mpofu and senior Zanu-PF leaders.

Weeks ago, the Zanu-PF youth league fingered Mpofu among other senior leaders like Joram Gumbo, Prisca Mupfumira and Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda as notable people involved in graft.

In a heated Politburo meeting after the allegations by the youths, Mnangagwa said he will appoint a commission to investigate the accused top chefs.

However, sources within the party said the corruption case could die a natural death.

"Remember when a vote of no confidence was made against the youth league executive early this year, Mnangagwa promised to set up a commission of inquiry but nothing has happened. The same is likely to happen with the Mpofu case and others, no commission will be appointed," said the official.

Zanu-PF spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo was not available for comment.

Recently, newly appointed Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission chairperson Loice Matanda Moyo challenged the Zanu-PF youth league to provide her commission with evidence to back the allegations they made against the senior party leaders.

She said her commission was best placed to investigate the allegations and it was not necessary for Mnangagwa to set up another commission.
