ONLY one female candidate has been nominated to contest the Lupane East National Assembly by-election.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Sithembile Gumbo of Zanu-PF who was the MP for the constituency. By the time the Nomination Court closed on June 14, nine candidates had been dully nominated.

In its critique, observer group Zimbabwe Election Support Network (Zesn) said it was disheartening that only one of the contesting candidates, Alice Sibanda of the NCA, is a woman.

The rest are men, Andrew Magodla Tshaba of Mthwakazi Republic Party,  Morgan Ndlovu of the Labourers Economic Party, Given Ncube of MDC-T, Dalumuzi Khumalo MDC Alliance, Mbongeni Dube the Zanu-PF candidate, Njabulo Sibanda NPF, Gezekile Mkwebu of Zapu and Nelson Bhekinhlalo Mkandla of Nap.

"In the interest of promoting the representation of women by other women, more political parties could have fielded female candidates.

"Even Zanu-PF did not field a female candidate despite the fact their late MP for the constituency was a woman," Zesn said.

With more than one candidate declared duly nominated, polling is expected to take place on August 3 as scheduled.
