MARONDERA residents are now sleeping in subsidised Zupco buses in a desperate bid to secure seats to travel to Harare for work amid a worsening transport crisis.

Transport operators are charging $8 to Harare while Zupco is charging $1,50 from Marondera to Harare.

Zupco buses are parking at Dombotombo market and many people are walking for kilometres to get to the buses.

Some of the Marondera residents who spoke to the Daily News on Sunday said the buses provided are not adequate to service the route.

"We are sleeping in the bus because these buses are very few. We want to secure seats to go to work tomorrow and some people are paying for tickets in advance," said Takunda Charove, a Marondera resident.

Another woman who walked more than five kilometres from Rusike to Dombotombo said there is no other option. She said her income has been wiped by the galloping inflation.
"We are now at the mercy of unscrupulous pirate taxis and kombis," she said.

"I cannot afford to pay $8 per trip every day. We really thank the government for the low Zupco fares, but they are very few.''

She said her salary remains unchanged even though prices of everything were skyrocketing.

Another resident from Cherima said: "The kombi fare increases to $8 from $4 are not sustainable and we appeal to the powers that be to add more urban buses."

Government last week announced that it was introducing Zupco buses with cheaper fares, but these are not enough to cater for the large numbers of commuters in the country's major cities.
