Lobels, the country's oldest and largest bakery plans to commission a $2million second production line at its Belmont factory in Bulawayo in April to increase production capacity.

Once set up, it is expected to increase bread production levels to reach 60 000 a day.

A loaf of bread cost $1 or R7.

An official at the firm said the commissioning is at an advanced stage. "We plan to have the plant commissioned by end of April. We are currently waiting for some equipment from outside the country. But l can safely say the commissioning of the line is now at an advanced stage," he said.

The remaining equipment is from South Africa. The firm has sunk $2 million in the second production plant.

At its peak, Lobel's produced about 300 000 loaves per day, but output has declined in the last few year.

Lobels once closed production operations at its Harare bakery for two months owing to unavailability of lines of credit to boost operations
