HARARE - The local unit of global banking group, Standard Chartered (Stanchart) has appointed James Maposa as its new chairman with effect from the 1st of this month.

Maposa a veteran mining executive was first appointed to the bank’s board in July,  2006 as a non-executive director.

He is currently the country manager of Anglo American Corporation (Anglo), Unki Platinum Mines and previously the managing director of Anglo’s Zimbabwean operations.

A previous president of the Chamber of Mines, Maposa serves on the boards of Hippo Valley Tongaat Hulett, chairman of Anglo’s Pension Fund and chairman of the Mining Industry Pension Fund.

Maposa's appointment comes on the back of Ralph Watungwa's ascending to the role of chief executive early this year following the resignation of Washington Matsaira, who had been at the helm for over a decade.

Stanchart is part of foreign-owned banks that have been castigated for their reluctance to conform with the country's indigenisation policy by Indigenisation minister Saviour Kasukuwere.

The Indigenisation ministry is however still to announce indigenisation thresholds for the financial services sector despite calls for them to cede calling stakes to locals.
