Old Mutual selects Zimbabwean for top job

LIFE insurer Old Mutual recently appointed Ralph Mupita as CEO of Old Mutual Emerging Markets following the resignation of Kuseni Dlamini, who has been at the helm since 2009.

Mr Mupita, an engineer who holds an MBA from the University of Cape Town, has been working for the insurer for close to 12 years, and Old Mutual management in London is confident he has the skills, expertise and experience to drive business growth in emerging markets.

He joined Old Mutual in 2000 and has held various positions such as MD of Old Mutual Trust and group director of sales. He was appointed as CEO of life and savings last April.

Mupita (39) did his A levels in maths and science at Plumtree High 20 years ago.

Asked to comment on the value he would add in his new job, Mr Mupita said: "I have been at Old Mutual for some time now. I have a deep appreciation of the culture and values of the organisation — and that is key in leading the organisation.

"I have been intimately involved in the development of the group strategy of the business since 2006, as well as operationally involved in the major businesses, so I have an acute sense of our strength and areas where we need to raise our performance.

"Importantly, I know the people in the business very well.

"People drive and generate performance."

Commenting on the prospects for this year, Mr Mupita said: "We see growth opportunities in a lot of the markets that we operate in, particularly in SA and the rest of the African continent, and that’s very exciting for us.

"That said, market conditions in 2012 will remain challenging given the European sovereign debt crisis and slower and jobless global growth.

"Challenges present opportunities, and we will remain alive to the opportunities to grow our emerging markets franchise."
