FORMER Vice President Joice Mujuru's National People's Party (NPP) is on the verge of collapse after members of its national leadership have begun resigning en masse.

Amongst those who have ditched the ex-State Vice President are party VP Samuel Sipepa Nkomo, national chair, Dzikamai Mavhaire and party spokesperson Jeffreyson Chitando.

In resignation letters seen by NewZimbabwe.com, the politicians indicated that they were not able to continue working under Mujuru.

"It was a pleasure working together as a team. I now wish you madam President, the party greater progress in your future endeavours," Mavhaire wrote.

Asked why he was ditching NPP, the once Energy Minister said he was resigning on "personal reasons".

Nkomo, on his part, denied he was dumping Mujuru in order to return to his former party, MDC which has since begun uniting its factions under new party leader Nelson Chamisa.

The once Water Resources Minister left the mainstream MDC during the party's 2014 split.

Chitando blamed Mujuru for blocking calls among some of her allies to join forces with MDC ahead of elections with the party failing to pick up a single seat in the country's 350 member combined parliamentary and senatorial assembly.

Unconfirmed reports said out of the nine national working committee members who were under Mujuru's leadership, five have since tendered their resignation letters whilst 60% of the standing committee members had already resigned.

Provincial chairs for Matabeleland North, Bulawayo, Midlands, Matebeleland South and Masvingo have also resigned.
